HOUSTON ROLLER DERBY’S RECREATIONAL LEAGUE (ALSO REFERRED TO AS “REC LEAGUE”) IS AN ATHLETIC AND SOCIAL ORGANIZATION FORMED TO GIVE ALL WOMEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN AND PLAY FLAT TRACK ROLLER DERBY.
Rec League is a place for women to train and learn to play roller derby without having to make the commitments required to be a home team skater. It offers women a fun, safe, opportunity to express and build their athletic abilities.
Our members vary in age and athletic ability. Women attend Rec League for different reasons. Many women attend to learn the skills in preparation for future HRD home team skater tryouts, and others just for a great workout.
All skaters must be 18 years or old.
OUR PROGRAM STRUCTURE:
BOOT CAMP – 6 WEEK PROGRAM FOR $75, FOR THOSE NEW TO ROLLER DERBY AND HRD.
This level will focus on the basic WFTDA standards to play roller derby, and instill the foundation for proper skating form and footwork. Every new skater to HRD regardless of skill will need to attend Boot Camp on their first night. If they possess the skills needed to advance, they may be assessed and moved up that night. Those that do not pass the assessments at the end of Boot Camp will stay in Boot Camp for another 6 week session.
L1 – 12 WEEK PROGRAM FOR $75, FOR THOSE THAT HAVE GRADUATED BOOT CAMP BUT ARE NOT READY FOR CONTACT.
This level will focus on fundamental footwork, form, endurance and refining other basic skills needed to be prepared for contact play. Those that do not pass the assessments at the end of L1 will stay in L1 for another 12 week session.
L2 – 12 WEEK PROGRAM FOR $75, FOR THOSE READY FOR CONTACT AND BASIC GAME PLAY STRATEGY.
This level will focus on fundamentals of hitting, blocking, jamming, endurance, and basic gameplay strategy. This level is eligible to play in the Betties Friends & Family bouts to showcase what they have learned, and gain gameplay experience. This level will also be eligible to play in Open Scrimmages and Mash-up bouts once they’ve passed the rules test. Those that do not pass the assessments at the end of L2 will stay in L2 for another 12 week session. This level will require WFTDA insurance.
L3 – 12 WEEK PROGRAM (ONCE A WEEK - $75 OR TWICE A WEEK - $150), FOR THOSE WHO ARE COMFORTABLE WITH CONTACT, FAMILIAR WITH MORE COMPLEX GAMEPLAY STRATEGY, AND HAVE ADVANCED ENDURANCE.
This level will focus on increasing intensity of hitting, blocking, jamming, endurance and advanced gameplay strategy. This level has the opportunity to skate 2x a week, Tuesdays at Betties practice and also Monday nights at League practice. These skaters should be able to keep up with League practice standards both in physical activity and derby brain. This level is also eligible to play in the Betties Friends & Family bouts to showcase what they have learned, along with Open Scrimmages and Mash-up bouts to gain more gameplay experience. If a skater has not taken the rules test previously, they will be required to do so. This level will require WFTDA insurance.
Bouting Betties – This will be the Machete Betties competitive team. Any L3 skater may be part of the team as long as they meet the requirements listed below. This team’s goal is to help create stronger Rec league skaters, therefore providing a stronger potential Fresh Meat pool. This level will require WFTDA insurance. Please see more information here.
